LM Music Tech - Young Person Case Study

The following is a small case study from a national partner who is delivering Leicestershire Music's iPad Scheme of Work.

2. The starting point

- A reluctant student who often switches off or becomes distracted in lessons.
- Demonstrates low self esteem.
- Quick to disengage completely if he feels like he doesn't understand.
- Initially reluctant to the unit.

3. The young person's participation in the project

- From the second lesson onwards, mastered how to perform column switches and connected with how loop sequencing works.
- Focus improved each lesson.
- Later was volunteering to demonstrate his creations.
- Now improvises on other instruments in front of the class, something which his teacher says he never would have done before the iPad GarageBand Unit.

"A reluctant music student who often switches off or becomes distracted in lessons and demonstrates low levels of self-esteem. He is quick to disengage completely if he feels like he doesn't understand a concept or perceives he has made a mistake. He was initially reluctant for the first lesson but from the second lesson onwards when he mastered how to do column switches on time, he seemed to connect with how loop sequencing works. His focus improved in every lesson, to the point that he was later volunteering to demonstrate his own creations in lessons, sharing his attempts at creating structure and dynamics.

His improved enthusiasm for music has also continued now that the project has ended and he has been confident to improvise on other instruments in front of the class, and fully engage in the lessons, which I don't think would have happened before the iPad project. It is as though through the iPad project, he has made a connection with music and performance, which has since stayed with him".
