"AG joined the Junior Choir with low confidence and self-esteem, impacted by dyslexia and mental health challenges. Initially overwhelmed, she gradually gained confidence through emotional support, learning songs, and performing at events like Trinity Church and the National Music for Youth competition. Her wellbeing has improved noticeably, both in and out of school, and her mum credits the choir for helping AG make friends, smile more, and rediscover joy through music."

New Choir Structure for 2026 / 27

From next term, we will be introducing a new system that divides the existing Junior Choirs into two age groups:

Junior Choir: School Years 2–4
Intermediate Choir: School Years 5–8

This change will allow us to focus more effectively on age-appropriate vocal skills, repertoire, and musical understanding, ensuring that all singers are appropriately challenged and supported as they progress. The groups will cross over for half an hour for each rehearsal so we can maintain the sense of community and shared performance that is so important to the choirs.

NEW Singing Medal Scheme

This scheme will:

  • Encourage musical skills development
  • Build confidence and a sense of achievement

FAQs about our New Choir Structure

Which Choir should my child attend?

Your child should attend based on their school year:

Years 2–4: Junior Choir
Years 5–8: Intermediate Choir

There is flexibility with this so talk to us if you think your child should be in a different group.

Will children still perform together?

Yes.

Although some of each rehearsal will focus on age-specific skills, there will be regular opportunities for additional combined rehearsals and performances.

What if I cannot pick up at the different times?

There is an overlap between Junior and Intermediate sessions at each venue to support families with siblings or timing challenges wherever possible.

What is the Singing Medal Scheme?

It is a structured programme where singers develop vocal and musical skills and are rewarded with coloured ribbons as they progress through levels.

Do children need to audition for Intermediate Choir or Youth Choir?

No formal audition is required.

Placement is primarily based on school year, with guidance from staff where appropriate.

What happens after Intermediate Choir?

Singers can progress to the Youth Choir, where they will continue to develop more advanced musical skills.

Are concerts compulsory?

Concerts are strongly encouraged as they are an important part of the choir experience, but we understand that occasionally children may not be able to attend.

Please make a note of the following performance opportunities:

10th December 2026 – Christmas Choir Concert, Guildhall (Leicester)
18th December 2026 – LOROS Concert, Leicester Cathedral
14th April 2027 – Choral Spectacular, De Montfort Hall
19th June 2027 – Concert - Haymarket Theatre
