Red Letter Days Listening Resource
Leicestershire Music are excited to bring you another new, comprehensive, FREE resource to use in your school!
Created alongside our fabulous Lead Practitioners ( Laura Norris – Newlands Community Primary, Gail Wheatley – The Hall School, Jenny Johnson – Rothley C of E Primary and Abbie Davis – St Peter's CE Primary ) and following on from our very successful Active Listening Resource, our new Red Letter Day Listening Resource supplements this with musical opportunities linked to a variety of special events throughout the year. Including religious festivals, national and international celebrations and awareness days, the resource will support a variety of assembly themes.
As part of the Model Music Curriculum, schools are asked to enrich the learning of music by 'developing pupils' shared knowledge and understanding of the stories, origins, traditions, history and social context of the music they are listening to, singing and playing.'
Our resource will support teachers/leaders to deliver high quality musical listening, whether in assemblies or in the classroom, focussing on expanding musical vocabulary, understanding the inter-related dimensions of music, learning about historical and social context and reflecting on their own musical appreciations and experiences.
There is a unit for each half term with a good selection of important and special days and events for you to select from. Please see the Overview document for each half term with the key dates and resources available.
You will see there is a presentation with planning alongside this for whoever is delivering the listening activity (with answers provided to the questions!) The presentation is split into 5 days, with the flexibility of each slide lasting 2 minutes to 10 minutes and is designed to be used in the following way (although schools may use it in the best way that works for them):
Day 1: Listen to a piece of music and learn about its musical context.
Day 2: Explore the piece of music in more detail, developing listening skills.
Day 3: Listen to another piece of music and learn about its musical context.
Day 4: Explore the piece of music in more detail, developing listening skills.
Day 5: Compare and contrast the two pieces of music.
