Sheep Beats - FREE Resource with Key Stage 2 Lesson Plan

Sheep Beats is a free, browser based application which allows pupils to quickly begin notating drum patterns. Using a repeating one bar loop, pupils can enter notes into the grid and watch and hear the sheep animations play back what has been entered. There are some pre-set patterns which exemplify drum rhythms associated with a few genres and there is also the capability to enter in melodic bass lines and chords.

NB - This is a large resource file and is hosted on Dropbox. We are aware that some school internet providers are not set to allow access to Dropbox links. If this is the case, please contact your provider who should be able to arrange your access. An alternative is to download the file/s on the given link/s using a different internet connection.

Once downloaded, extract ALL of the files and save them to a folder of your choice. You will receive the lesson PowerPoint (with embedded video files), printable resources and written lesson plan. On the first page of the planning are other ideas for main activities using Sheep Beats.

Examples of Sheep Beats planning from Teachers

Music Co-ordinator and Nursery SENCO at Beacon Academy, Karen Jones, has produced a 6 lesson unit of work for year 5, however it could be adapted and taught to year 4 and 6 respectively. The unit uses the free online resource, Sheep Beats, as the main stimulus for exploring various aspects of musical learning such as reading and writing graphic and standard notation; listening to and appraising music from a range of genres and performing created pieces, using a blend of organic and computer music. Karen has kindly shared this planning with us and welcomes teachers to use it to help support their planning.
