Education & Bass Case Study

The project's key emphasis is on delivering accredited Music Technology provision to the targeted cohort.

Case Study compiled by Andrew Ferguson, Director and Tutor at Education & Bass.

1. Basic Project Information

The primary objective of this initiative is to provide specialised and efficacious accredited Music Technology Provision to youth in the Leicestershire region. The intended beneficiaries are individuals who are unable to attend conventional education for a temporary or permanent duration, due to various reasons. The project's key emphasis is on delivering accredited Music Technology provision to the targeted cohort.

2. Challenges

The primary hurdles encountered in the project's implementation were the lack of adequate numbers required for the financial viability of the initiative. However, the project team is actively working towards remedying this issue, considering the project's unique potential to assist a significant number of individuals. Consequently, the approach has been tailored to a one-to-one model, necessitating additional motivation efforts to engage the current participant, who expresses a preference for group learning settings. Despite these challenges, the learner is evidently invested in the program, displaying exceptional progress rates and consistent attendance, with only a single absence recorded to date.

3. Action

We are working on the marketing of the project to help create more awareness.

4. Outcomes

Outcomes from the project so far includes a 14 year old who has been removed from mainstream education that is now achieving post-16 level achievements in Music Technology and it is highly anticipated that if we continue to work with said young person that they could achieve a grade in the RSL Music Production Grades that comes with UCAS points and this would be achieved at the age of 15/16, which is a HUGE positive deal in the world of Alternative provision. Thee is also potential for young people to continue work with us with a post-16 diploma option, which is believed to be something that in partnership with locals authorities and schools could go a long way to doing great things for alternative provision in Leicestershire, long term.

5. Quotes

JH (Learner): "I find that one-to-one learning allows me to progress more efficiently and with greater ease, but it would be good to work alongside others. I really enjoy creating music, which I am passionate about, and I learn new things every day, making the whole experience fun and engaging. It's something I would like to pursue as a career, and engaging in music has a calming effect on me while also enhancing my focus."

Franki (E&B Tutor):"As an educator working in mainstream education, I have observed numerous challenges in engaging learners effectively. However, as a music producer, I recognise the immense value of providing specialised music education. Through my involvement with the Education & Bass initiative, I have personally witnessed the remarkable engagement and progress made by participants."
