Imagine a world without music….
The Importance of Learning Music and its Decline
Anyone who has learnt and played a musical instrument or had aspirations to be a singer/musician knows just how valuable it is to be able to create music. The benefits of learning and performing music for mental health, cognitive development, increasing confidence and transferable skills are well documented (see The Power of Music) (also why-sing-learn-or-play-an-instru). However, music is increasingly being sidelined due to insufficient funding and is at risk of becoming available only to those who can afford it (see the recent report by DEMOS - Facing the Music).
Aren't you fully funded to teach music?
Sadly, no. We are part funded by the Department for Education, via Arts Council England (ACE). But, the amount of funding we receive from them has remained largely the same since 2012, while the costs of delivering music education are constantly rising. A recent report suggested the 43 Music Hubs across England are currently underfunded by £161.4m (see Facing the Music).
One of our funding requirements is that 50% of our income must come from other sources than the ACE grant. We are able to raise some of this money from schools / parents but unfortunately they too are now under increasing financial pressures.
