FREE National Youth Jazz Orchestra Ambassadors School Workshops

FREE National Youth Jazz Orchestra Ambassadors School Workshops

Leicester-shire Music Education Hub (LMEH) is delighted to be a Feature Partner of the National Youth Jazz Orchestra (NYJO). As part of their ongoing work in the city and county, NYJO will be visiting local schools in January/February 2019, for a series of workshops designed to introduce improvisation and grow the confidence of young musicians, supported by Youth Music.

In these sessions, NYJO musicians will work with your students to lift the lid on jazz –addressing the fundamentals such as groove, playing by ear and improvisation. NYJO workshops are designed to cater for musicians with a range of technical levels and experience and should enhance musical understanding in general as well as improve specific jazz knowledge.

Following the workshop sessions, students will be invited to take part in a weekend workshop @ The Venue, DMU where they'll spend Saturday 16th March with like-minded students from across the county creating music to be performed live on Sunday 17th March alongside the National Youth Jazz Orchestra.

If your school takes part, you'll receive:

- 1 half-day session (approx. 2.5 hours in length) in school, choosing from the following dates:

Monday 28th January – PM

Tuesday 29th January – AM

Tuesday 29th January – PM

Monday 11th February – AM

Tuesday 12th February – AM

Tuesday 12th February - PM

- Workshops led by a NYJO Associate Educator, with vast experience of delivering jazz workshops, supported by two NYJO Ambassadors (young members of the National Youth Jazz Orchestra who are receiving training in workshop leading).

- NYJO visiting musicians can provide all the equipment they require.

- Support from the National Youth Jazz Orchestra if you are developing or setting up an improvising ensemble within your school.

- The opportunity to attend a weekend workshop and performance opportunity alongside NYJO

In return, you'll need to:

- Provide suitable group(s) of young musicians to take part – up to a maximum of 30. These can be from Years 7,8 & 9

- Provide equipment to enable your young musicians to participate.

- Respond to evaluation surveys

- Signpost participants towards local jazz activities including the 16 & 17 March workshop and performance at The Venue, DeMontfort University.

- Keep in touch with LMEH regarding the development of Jazz opportunities in the future – including the opportunity to help shape and lead some of the work going forwards.

**To register your interest please email sarah.barton@leics.gov.uk by Friday 18th January stating your preferred date from those listed above. Places are limited and will be allocated on a first come first served basis**.

We look forward to working with you on this exciting project soon!
