Funky Orchestra with Attitude - An LSMS / Philharmonia / Joe Broughton collaboration

Leicester-Shire Schools Music Service and the Philharmonia Orchestra are excited to be collaborating on a genre defying creative workshop for up to 70 young musicians in Leicester, taking place on Sunday 27th January from 10.00am - 4.00pm at Wigston College, Station Road, Wigston LE18 2DP.

Working with renowned composer and multi-instrumentalist Joe Broughton and Philharmonia Orchestra musicians, you will have the chance to come together with other young musicians and devise music that has no boundaries. Drawing on a range of styles and tying in thematic strands from the Philharmonia Orchestra's season, you'll work with Joe and the musicians to create new music without the use of notation. The day will be about creating a new kind of ensemble – it's time for a funky orchestra that has attitude. Sign up now to explore the possibilities of what 70 people playing together can sound like when we throw out the rule book!"

Joe Broughton is a multi-instrumentalist, composer, producer and educator based in Birmingham, UK. As well as his own internationally renowned band The Urban Folk Quartet, Joe has played with everyone from Joss Stone to Fairport Convention. His compositions have been performed at The Royal Albert Hall and the Barbican Centre in London and his workshops in performance and ensemble playing are legendary amongst the teaching community. He now leads the Birmingham Conservatoire Folk Ensemble which recently performed as a flash mob in New Street Station - please click here for some of his other work.

This promises to be a really exciting day. Students need to be approx. Grade 4 standard in order to comfortably take part and we're looking for an eclectic mix of instruments – you never know, we might be the first LSMS flash mob too!

Please click on the survey monkey link below to register to take part – there are only 70 places and it will be promoted outside of the LSMS ensemble members. The closing date is Friday 14th December unless it is oversubscribed before then. Places will be confirmed via email after the closing date.
