Leicester-Shire Schools Music Service - 70th Anniversary
1948 - 2018
Leicester-Shire Schools Music Service was founded by Eric Pinkett OBE in 1948, marking the beginning of a rich heritage of music education and opportunities for City and County students that continues to this day. We are thought to be the oldest music service of our kind in the UK.
We are excited and immensely proud that in 2018 we are celebrating 70 years of music-making with the young people of Leicester and Leicestershire.
Over the 70 years since our service was founded, we have provided music making opportunities to over 250,000 young people from around the city and county, many of whom have gone on to become involved in music professionally.
To celebrate our 70th year, we have an exciting programme of events lined up featuring performances by all our Ensembles, Bands, Orchestras & Choirs, collaborations, projects, commissioned work and re-union events. Be sure to look through our Events section to see what's on near you.
To celebrate our 70th Anniversary, we have commissioned an exciting and ambitious large-scale project, working collaboratively with the Philharmonia Orchestra our partner for over 20 years. This gives us a unique opportunity to create a legacy for future musicians to enjoy and to give students the chance to show their creative skills by composing and performing their own piece of celebratory music working alongside professional musicians. It also celebrates the rich, cultural diversity of the work both organisations deliver.
Legend of the Sky is a composition by Fraser Trainer with a libretto from Hazel Gould, which includes a large orchestral ensemble with steel pans and Indian classical musicians, a massed primary school choir and the LSMS show choir who, alongside members of the Philharmonia Orchestra, perform an epic oratorio reimagining the ancient Leicestershire folk legend, The Griffin of Griffydam. The music narrates the tale of a griffin, a fabulous creature with the head and wings of an eagle and the body of a lion who terrorised the villagers of Griffydam...
We were very proud to present the world premiere of Legend of the Sky at De Montfort Hall, Leicester, on Saturday 3rd February 2018. This willbe followed by the national premiere at the Music for Youth Schools Prom in November 2018 at the Royal Albert Hall, London.
See a short film about the project and De Montfort Hall performance below.
Since we started up in 1948 we've supported and nurtured the music making of tens of thousands of talented young musicians from in and around Leicester and Leicestershire and we're really keen to reconnect with as many as possible.
