Hire a musical instrument through your local City Library
You can now visit your local Leicester City Library* and apply to hire a musical instrument from Leicestershire Music. ( * Please scroll down to see the list of participating libraries below). As Leicestershire Music works with young people, instruments must be hired on behalf of a young person up to the age of 18.
Please see the section below 'what instruments are available to Hire and How music is Hire' to view available instruments and hire prices. If you are in receipt of financial assistance, you may be able to hire an instrument free of charge. Please see the section below for more details
How does Instrument Hire through my Library work?
Once you know which instrument you'd like to hire, please click the link below

This will take you to Leicestershire Music's Database where you can register your details. As part of the registration please indicate which library you would like to collect the instrument from.
Once your request is received. Leicestershire Music will arrange for the instrument to be delivered to your Library for you to collect. This can take up to 2 weeks depending on availability of instruments and transportation. Therefore please allow 2 weeks for delivery and then, before travelling, contact your local library to ensure your instrument has arrived.
When you arrive at the Library to collect the instrument please let the member of team know the name of the pupil using the instrument and the instrument type that you are collecting and they will hand this over to you.
You will also receive an instrument loan information pack via email, which will contain extra information, please keep this email safe for future reference.
How do I know if I'm Eligible for FREE Instrument Hire?
To qualify for FREE instrument hire. you will need to be in receipt of at least one of the following benefits or meet the criteria:
- Evidence of Child in receipt of Free School Meals
- Universal Credit with an annual net earned income of no more than £7,400.
- Income Support
- Income-based Jobseeker's Allowance
- Income-related Employment and Support Allowance
- Support under Part 6 of the Immigration and Asylum Act 1999
- The guarantee element of Pension Credit
- Working Tax Credit run-on (paid for the four weeks after you stop qualifying for Working Tax Credit)
- Child Tax Credit (with no Working Tax Credit) with an annual income of no more than £16,190
- Looked after Child
How do I let you know if I think I'm eligible for FREE Instrument Hire?
We need to receive proof that you are eligible before we can help.
When you register for an instrument, please also complete the fee discount request form (see Fee Discount Application Form), where you will be asked to complete a form and upload scanned copies of supporting evidence.
The supporting evidence will be assessed by Leicestershire Music before being accepted.
Please note that without Proof of Entitlement we are unable to Help with costs. Leicestershire Music's decision is final.

What instruments are available to Hire and How much is Hire?

Band 2 £66 per Year, £22 per Term | Cello, Oboe, Alto Saxophone, Baritone Horn, Euphonium & Tuba , Tabla |
How do I pay
If you are eligible for free instrument hire you may receive an emailed invoice stating 'nothing to pay', you do not need to do anything, this is sent for information only.
However, if you are not eligible for free instrument hire, you will be sent an invoice each school term. This will be emailed to you. The email that you receive will contain a link to enable you to log into your instrument hire account, where you will be able to pay online securely via a debit or credit card. Please contact music@leics.gov.uk if you are unable to pay in this way.
What do I do if I no longer want / need to Hire the instrument?
If you no longer want / need to hire the instrument, please contact music@leics.gov.uk to notify that you wish to return the instrument stating the hirer name and instrument number. You can return to any of the libraries listed below.
