Interested in joining an Ensemble?

We refer to our central performance groups collectively as 'Ensembles' - these can be Orchestras, Bands, Choirs or Ensembles!

There are currently seven Bands, Orchestras and Ensembles which rehearse on saturday mornings and six Evening Groups - all run through our charity, The Leicester-Shire Music and Cultural Trust.

Information about each Ensemble, including grade level, rehearsal venue, rehearsal and performance dates etc, can be found on our Ensemble Information page.

For more information about our Ensembles, please watch our short Ensembles video (to the right).

Places in our Senior saturday Ensembles - The Leicester-Shire Schools Symphony Orchestra, Concert Orchestra and Wind Orchestra - are offered after our annual auditions. Auditions give us a chance to hear you play and make sure you are placed in the most suitable group to give you the best and most enjoyable experience. These take place on saturdays in the summer term of each academic year.

Places in the Training Orchestra, Junior Concert Band, Strictly Strings, Steel Pan Ensembles are by application and will not require an audition.

Places in our Evening Groups are usually offered to students of a suitable ability when Saturday Ensemble invites are sent out following applications / auditions.

We also run a variety of after school activities in the City and County. Details of how to join are shown with the relevant activity information.

Information about Singing and Choirs can be found on our Singing Opportunities page.

Once you have registered for an audition, we will confirm your audition time, date and venue and what we would like to hear you play. Auditions will be held on Saturdays (usually the morning) and will start after Easter. N.B. Audition appointments will be emailed out and cannot be changed except in exceptional circumstances.

Auditions are free of charge but there is a cost associated for membership of a group. For the audition, students will be asked to prepare one piece of their choice and will be given a scale to prepare, along with appropriate sight reading. (Your instrumental teacher will be able to help you prepare for the audition).

The deadline for applications is Friday 18th May. If you would like to audition for a place, please contact us ASAP as this will help with the audition timetabling process.

Results and placings will be emailed out by the end of July - these will include links to all the details you will need regarding rehearsal dates, times, venues and concerts.

We are especially looking for students who play the following;

Viola, Double Bass, French Horn, Trombone, Tuba, Oboe, Bassoon.

For all new pupils playing one of these instruments, the first term of ensemble membership is free followed by 50% subsidy for the rest of the academic year – this also includes the free hire of an instrument for the entire time you are a member of one of our ensembles.

If you are new to the service and are interested in joining an ensemble, or your circumstances have changed and you would like to re-join , please email lsmsperformance@leics.gov.uk and let us know your age, instrument and level of any grades taken and we will let you know which group would be best for you and availability of places.

We have an outstanding reputation for providing quality aspirational and motivating ensembles and performance opportunities for students. Every group rehearses weekly practising repertoire to be performed at the end of each term in high quality venues around Leicestershire. At each performance there is chance for students and parents to see performances by other groups within the ensemble structure and also those given by our Hub partners including school groups.

Please see the table below for the Ensembles that are suitable for your instrument and ability level.
