Jazz Offer - 2020

UPDATE - Due to the Coronavirus pandemic, the Jazz 2020 events have been put on hold but we will be meeting with Leicester Jazz House when appropriate to formulate new opportunities. These will be posted here, on social media and will be sent to schools and students.

WHY JAZZ?

Listening to different genres of music exposes young musician's ears to a wide breadth of sound and culture. Jazz is key in expanding creativity as a musician, but young people are not always exposed to it.

At Leicester-Shire Music Education Hub we have been working with a range of local and national Jazz partners to put together the following offer. Some are for schools to sign up to, others are for pupils to be signposted to and some are just great offers for young people and their families to access to live performance in local venues.

FOR SCHOOLS: Visiting live Jazz Ensemble (KS3 & 4)

A jazz ensemble of 4 or 5 local musicians will visit your school and perform to the young people. Pupils can then ask questions directly to the musicians about their musical careers, interests, jazz and improvisation techniques tip and tricks or about the pieces performed. The ensemble will be accompanied by a member of Leicester-Shire Schools Music Service staff.

There are currently 6 slots available as follows:

Friday 6th March AM / PM
Thursday 12th March AM / PM
Friday 20th March AM / PM

To sign up please click here and indicate your chosen date and either an AM or PM slot.

The visits are FREE OF CHARGE and will be allocated on a first come first served basis (more dates will be released for next academic year)

FOR STUDENTS: Jazz Masterclasses

Leicester is lucky to boast a wealth of live music venues with visiting Jazz musicians performing throughout the year. The following artists have agreed to do a masterclass for up to 12 students – either as an existing school-based ensemble or a collection of interested musicians from your school.

The offer includes a 90-minute masterclass (4.30-6pm) plus tickets to see the artist perform in the evening (8pm performance). Both of the following musicians have a wide educational experience. Students will need to bring their instruments with them, but prior knowledge of improvisation is not essential

To sign up please click here and complete the form, indicating your preferred choice.

Masterclasses are FREE OF CHARGE and will be allocated on a first come first served basis and a teacher must accompany the young people for both the masterclass and the performance.

FOR FAMILIES: Discounted and Free tickets to Jazz performances

An essential part of learning to play Jazz is going to see it live! The following performances have kindly been offered by Leicester Jazz House as free of charge or heavily discounted. Students and their families can sign up by emailing sarah.barton@leics.gov.uk and a list of names will be given to the venue in advance so that tickets can be collected on the night.
