Leicestershire Choral Scholarships for Season 2017/18 (40th Anniversary Season)

Posted: Fri, 30 Jun 2017 13:14

Auditions:

Tues 19th September and Tues 3rd October from 6.30pm (more specific details provided nearer the time) at St Philip's Church, Evington Road, Leicester LE21HN. Successful candidates to start from Thursday Oct 5th.

Audition requirements:

* Solo song which shows off vocal range, expressive communication and lyrical singing (please bring copy for accompanist)

* Singing at sight a piece from within the English Tudor Period (in English, modern notation and with some piano support)

* Aural tests - recognising and pitching intervals, notes from within 3 note chords, singing chromatic and diatonic maj/min scales, recognising pulse, singing back a melody.

* Interview with committee member to discuss required commitment and general membership of the choir.

We expect our Scholars and Student Members to attend a majority of rehearsals and all concerts and fundraising events (of which there are six per season), even if these fall outside of term times (Leicestershire Schools or University). Any flexibilities must be negotiated in good time with the Director of the choir.

In receipt of this loyalty and committed membership, a Scholar receives £75 a term, with an additional £25 bonus should they attend the majority of rehearsals and sing in the main concert. Other concerts and events attract an additional £25 fee. Therefore, were a Scholar to attend the majority of rehearsals in a given term, sing in the main concert and also sing in the other concert that term, they could expect to receive a sum of £125 for that term. Neither Choral Scholars nor Student Members pay anything to sing in the choir (The current full membership fee is £175 p.a.).

The choir rehearses once a week at St Philip's Church from 7.15-9.15 on a Thursday evening, largely during Leicestershire School Term Dates. A copy of the rehearsal dates for next season are attached with this message. Occasionally extra rehearsals are scheduled for special projects (for instance our 40th Anniversary Verdi Concert which has an additional schedule for the weekend of the event) or we may choose to extend the normal Thursday timings from 7-9.30.

A digital copy of our projects for next season is included but please be advised that the concert at St James the Greater Church on Saturday March 17th 2018, is now likely to take place the previous night (Fri March 16th) but at the same venue.

The Scholarship and Student Membership Scheme has been in play now for twelve years and we have seen a large number of former recipients go on to gain Choral Scholarships at University (including Oxbridge and Trinity College London) and also make successful entry into music college (Birmingham Conservatoire, RNCM and RCM). We have also helped slightly older singers of undergraduate and postgraduate age prepare for life in the singing profession.
