Identifying and supporting musical potential and talent in children and young people

Date: Thu, 07th Jun 2018, 16:00 - 18:30

Venue: Room 101, County Hall, Glenfield, Leicestershire, LE3 8RA

Back by popular demand and for those who missed it last year, Awards for Young Musicians is offering a free course in how to recognise and support children with musical potential. Join us to explore some practical ways of spotting talent when working with your class and ensuring all your children benefit. We'll be trying out some of the musical activities we've discovered are really effective, and giving you some planning ideas too. Get ready to sing and make lots of noise with percussion! We'll also show some examples from this CPD programme's online film resources and discuss some new approaches to supporting musical progression too.

Background
Awards for Young Musicians (AYM) instigated this programme in 2008. AYM aims to tackle the major barriers to progression for musically talented young people from lower income families. One of these barriers is what can be limited confidence amongst music leaders in how to identify young people's musical potential and also in how to support and nurture this potential once identified. This is largely because professional development for music leaders, whether they're working in formal or informal education, tends not to focus on this issue. The programme has so far developed in two major strands: a training model and a series of film resources. Led by musician Hugh Nankivell and Hester Cockcroft, Awards for Young Musicians
