The Song Hamper - Led by Sue Nichols & Hilary Miles

Date: Fri, 16 Mar 2018, 13:00 - 16:00

Venue: NSPCC, 3 Gilmour Cl, Leicester LE4 1EZ

Course description
'The Song Hamper' is a half-day course for all EYFS practitioners - a basketful of tasty songs that link to all the Areas of Learning and Development. Every song has been created to offer children a creative outcome...changing words to create new verses ... adding numbers to make a more mathematical focus... singing about newly introduced characters or adding new bath-time playthings! This flexibility provides for child-initiated learning and the repertoire can be sung outside or inside the setting; there are opportunities for making and using junk instruments to accompany the singing, too. Each song comes with full teaching notes, giving ideas and approaches for integrating music-making with the best holistic EYFS practice. The material is completely accessible and designed for non-specialists - every delegate will receive a CD Rom with recordings of the songs, backing tracks and the teaching notes.

This course is suitable for class teachers, NQTs, TAs and music co-ordinators who will be training other staff.

Course Leaders: Sue Nicholls and Hilary Miles

Sue Nicholls worked as a music subject leader and AST in many primary settings during her career as a teacher. She has published several music resource books for non-specialists for A & C Black and OUP and contributed material to many other publications. Sue now works as an independent music education consultant leading workshops and courses for schools and music hubs: she delivers PGCE music modules for teacher training at Leicester University and leads the 'fast-track' Trinity CME programme at the University of Northampton.

Hilary Miles was a Music AST in Northamptonshire for 11 years, and now works as a freelance Music Education Consultant. She has mentored teachers; led whole school productions; whole school Arts Weeks and Music Days; whole school staff meetings. She has written many resources for primary music teachers, including 'Connected to Music' a resource based on work with the RPO and Sinfonia Viva. Hilary's work involves Initial Teacher Training at the University of Northampton where she has written the modules for use of ICT in the primary music classroom. Recent work has included writing 'uses in class' for a new BBC video web-site and work on the BBC 10 pieces.
