Summer Music Week

Summer Music Week

Date: Mon, 15th Aug 2016 - Fri, 19th Aug 2016

Venue: Gorse Hill City Farm, Anstey Lane, Leicester, LE4 0FJ

Summer Music Week is a holiday event for young musicians to create a concert in a week. We have been running Summer Music Week at different locations since 2001 and it is one of the activities of our music organisation Drum and Brass, which is a partner to the LMEH.

This year we are offering our usual mix of orchestral playing, bands and ensembles and a choir, for players of grade 1+ at Gorse Hill City Farm. We will also offer free instrument taster sessions to children who have not played before. The week serves two purposes for young people. Firstly it gives young players a chance to broaden and develop their musical and creative skills in relaxed and enjoyable surroundings.

Secondly, more experienced young musicians are given the opportunity to develop their leadership skills in the planning stages and throughout the week. Many members of the LSSO have been part of this program in the past and this year we are lucky enough to have Clare Fowler and Griff Wadkin on our team. They learn about the responsibilities and tasks involved in creating the event and they lead sectionals, ensembles and other creative activities during the week. This has really positive outcomes for those involved and this year we will offer them the chance to take a bronze arts award.

Affordable access is important to us and to our players and the week costs just £25 per person.
