The Flying Dutchman is a workshop for KS3 teachers who want to do more singing in their classroom. The workshop begins with singing, exploring traditional work songs and The Sailors Chorus from the Flying Dutchman, which has especially been arranged for changing voices. A six week scheme of work is included and activities include performing (singing), arranging, composing and listening work aligned to the curriculum. The scheme of work centres around The Sailor's Chorus from Wagner's 1843 Opera, The Flying Dutchman and the main focus of the unit involves dramatic singing - having the students become the characters in this part of the opera, a group of sailors singing together. A CPD supports this resource focussing on healthy, dramatic singing techniques for the classroom and the scheme of work also includes access to online resources including recordings and video clips.
